Government to determine responsibility for accusations of torture in hospitals for disabled

Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said today that the government will form a special committee which will urgently make a report on the actual situation in institutions for mentally challenged persons.

“Relevant ministers have informed me that many facts presented in the report by the organisation Mental Disability Rights International (MDRI) on conditions in institutions for mentally challenged people are incorrect. Accusations that torture is used as a method for treating children and that these institutions are in fact prisons for children are particularly malicious.

The Serbian government will insist that all facts in this matter are brought to light and will also determine who is responsible for incorrect accusations made against Serbia in the report titled, “Torture as Treatment”.

We are witnesses to the fact that there is systematic propaganda against Serbia to show it as a country which is in the grip of fascism, even though every citizen of Serbia has the most bitter feelings against fascism and towards fascists who killed hundreds and thousands of innocent Serbs.

Now the prisons for helpless children are on the agenda, and the timing is not accidental. The Serbian government will fight against such dark propaganda with all possible democratic and legal means,” concludes the written statement by the Serbian Prime Minister.
