At a ceremony of paying state and military honours to fallen soldiers, jointly organised by allied states that have memorials in Belgrade, Serbian Minister of Culture Vojislav Brajovic said that Serbia has a special reason to observe this day since the war started in its territory by the declaration of war by Austria-Hungary and the German empire on July 28, 1914.
Paying honours to members of all armed forces of the countries that participated in World War I and civilian victims, Brajovic said that Serbia remains committed to human principles and ideals on which the modern Europe is based.
Apart from representatives of the ministries of labour and social policy, defence, foreign affairs, city authorities and non-governmental organisations, wreaths were also laid by representatives of the embassies of France, Austria, Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, Canada, Hungary, Romania, Russia, the US, Slovakia, Great Britain, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic.
Diplomatic representatives of Serbia at the same time laid wreaths to Serbian military memorials in 30 countries they are accredited in, to honour the memory of hundreds of thousands of civilians and soldiers who died in the battles for liberation of Serbia in World War I.
The war was ended by signing an armistice treaty between the victorious Entente Powers and Germany in a railway carriage in Compiegne Forest in France on November 11, 1918.
