Jeremic said in his lecture at the Serbian military academy’s School of National Defence on diplomatic aspects of resolving the status issue of Kosovo-Metohija that efficient and agile diplomatic activity is the only way to defend Serbia’s vital interests.
The position and platform of the Serbian government and state institutions regarding the question of the southern Serbian province are well known, as well as Serbia’s readiness to reach a compromise, Jeremic recalled and pointed to the fact that the Pristina delegation has not changed its stand in the least bit.
The Minister said that Serbia is willing to have a flexible approach in seeking a compromise while safeguarding its territorial integrity and sovereignty, which could secure stability on a regional and global level. Reminding that the mandate of the international troika of envoys will expire on December 10 and in case a solution is not reached until then two scenarios could follow.
He warned that one scenario could be unilateral moves, which could jeopardise security and stability not just in the region but beyond. The other scenario is that the international community takes the stand that it is necessary to continue looking for a compromise.
Jeremic pointed to the importance of future decisions by the EU which wants to integrate the West Balkans in order to remove the threat of instability. He added that the issue of the future status of Kosovo-Metohija must be resolved in keeping with European values.
Serbia cannot give up on its territorial integrity and sovereignty, or the path to EU. It is possible to reach a solution for the issue which is acceptable to all sides through diplomatic efforts with the support of the international community, said Jeremic.
The Foreign Minister’s lecture was also attended by Serbian Minister of Defence Dragan Sutanovac and Chief of General Staff Major-General Zdravko Ponos.
