Speaking at a conference on innovation and creative space in sustainable cities, Popovic explained that the strategy will include economic, social and ecological aspects of the future development of the Serbian society.
He stressed that it is time to give up a negligent attitude towards natural resources which the country possesses. He said that currently Serbia is investing only 0.5% of the GDP in environmental protection, while neighbouring countries spend three times more.
According to Popovic, Serbia also uses 2.5% more energy in production than its neighbours, and recycles only 5% of the waste.
Advisor to the Serbian Minister of Environmental Protection, Sinisa Mitrovic said that adoption of the concept of sustainable growth is important for saving energy and increasing recycling.
He expressed expectation that adoption of the strategy will encourage several banks and financers to invest larger funds in environmental protection projects.
The sustainable development strategy, together with strategies for poverty reduction, economic development and joining the EU, should define the vision of Serbia’s future.
The conference was organised by the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction and the Faculty of Architecture in Belgrade. It was held on occasion of the second cycle of the international competition in sustainable construction, “Holcim Awards”. Participants at the conference were representatives of the United Nations Environment Programme, professors of architecture and urbanism from the country and abroad.
Subjects such as urban development and transformation of cities in the context of sustainable construction were discussed.
