Speaking at a panel discussion titled, “Millennium Goals of the UN – Serbia’s position”, held at the Political Science Faculty, Kijevcanin said that unemployment and low level of education are basic reasons for poverty in Serbia, and added that economic development is the basic condition for reducing poverty.
According to Kijevcanin, there are many who live just over the poverty threshold, and the aim should be to prevent this group from growing in number.
She said that there are a big number of strategies and documents in Serbia which aim to fight against important social problems, but these are not mutually harmonious and often not in harmony with existing regulations and laws.
Serbia is a leader in the region according to the number of strategies adopted and there are currently 36 strategies at national level and 280 at local level, said Kijevcanin.
Dimensions of realising the United Nations Millennium Goals in Serbia were presented at the panel discussion experts of the UNDP and the UNICEF.
The discussion was organised on the occasion of the United Nations Day and the 35th birthday of the UN Club of the Political Science Faculty.
