On the occasion of the final phase of the twinning project on capacity building of the Serbian Ministry of Interior financed by the EU, Veljovic said that the project will allow more efficient fight against organised crime and noted that German police is the most important partner to our police in criminal police sector. He also expressed hope that cooperation will spread to other areas as well.
German Ambassador to Serbia Wolfram Maas said that the project that took 18 months included 75 study tours, seminars and working meetings. He added that competency of police must be constantly monitored and that its work should be promoted.
Head of the European Commission delegation to Serbia Josep Lloveras said that the EU is ready to support the Serbian government in police reform and fight against organised crime as it is an important part of the European partnership.
Lloveras said that the EU has backed 20 twinning projects in Serbia, three of which are related to police, and noted that the EU is ready to back another two such projects.
According to him, a lot more needs to be done in police reform, border management and fight against organised crime.
Daniel Giuglaris of the European Agency for Reconstruction (EAR) in Serbia said that EU set aside €48 million for reform of Serbian police and judiciary.
He pointed out that police officers need to be trained to collect evidence according to law with the aim of increasing the number of court verdicts for organised crime cases.
Giuglaris stressed that it is very important that evidence is submitted in court and that it is necessary to improve legislation regulating organised crime.
