Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Vladimir Titov fully confirmed in the talks held late today the common principled policy of Serbia and Russia based on respect for the UN Charter and the principle of inviolability of sovereignty and territorial integrity of internationally recognised states.
The two officials agreed that the UN Security Council Resolution 1244 is a basis for finding a compromise solution for the future status of the province of Kosovo-Metohija, and that only the UN Security Council has the mandate to make a decision on that status.
Kostunica pointed out that the principles outlined in Resolution 1244 must be used as the starting point in the negotiations, first of all the provisions in which all UN member states explicitly voice their respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Serbia, and at the same time confirm the request for providing wide and substantial autonomy for Kosovo within Serbia.
Vladimir Titov said that in line with its principled policy, Russia will accept only a solution reached by agreement and refuse any that is imposed. Titov underlined that if a solution is not acceptable for Serbia it will not be acceptable for Russia either.
Kostunica and Titov agreed that Serbia and Russia are participating in a constructive way in the negotiations and that they are firmly committed to finding a compromising solution in line with international law and Resolution 1244.
