Serbian Minister of Capital Investment Velimir Ilic said that the project is of high importance for Western Serbia whose road infrastructure is in bad condition. The Minister thanked the World Bank for the loan and said he hopes that the bank will also secure funding for roads in Southern Serbia and the Timocka Krajina region.
According to World Bank Belgrade office Director Carolyn Jungr, the project concerns rehabilitation of the Sabac-Zminjak, Prnjavor-Loznica, Kragujevac-Ravni Gaj, Ravni Gaj-Kraljevo, Loznica-Valjevo, Valjevo-Celije, and the Sabac-Valjevo roads.
The project also includes technical assistance, training, and provision of goods for the Serbian Road Directorate, said Jungr, adding that the Swedish national road administration has secured $1.5 million for increasing Serbia’s road safety.
Jungr recalled that the World Bank completed its $522 million three-year project for financing Serbia-Montenegro’s reforms in June this year, noting that a new, $550 million project will be implemented over the next three years.
According to project coordinator Aleksandar Radojicic, the road rehabilitation project totals $61 million. The Serbian Road Directorate will secure 10 percent, or $6.25 million, of the necessary funding.
