On October 5, 2000 Serbia opted for democratic development, defending dignity

Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said that today Serbia is facing its greatest trial since October 5, 2000, when it got freedom and became a democratic and legal state, under constant economic development.
In a written statement, Kostunica said that now, when Serbia has hit its stride with stable development, the US is trying to dismember Serbia as an internationally recognised country and UN member on the basis of Ahtisaari’s plan, which is contrary to all principles of international law.
The bombardment of Serbia was obviously not enough for the US and NATO, but they are at any price trying to implement Annex 11 of Ahtisaari’s plan and thus secure their military interests above all, the Prime Minister pointed out.
According to him, when seven years ago the Serbian people opted for democratic development it made a decision to defend the dignity of Sebia, and this certainly means that no one will be allowed to alter our state borders and to create another Albanian state on Serbian territory under the unlimited power of NATO.
Kostunica pointed out that it is a dangerous mistake to think that one can impose a solution to a free and democratic state such as Serbia.
Today, on October 5, we state that any unilateral independence, if proclaimed, is destined to disaster and that to Serbia Kosovo-Metohija shall always be an unalienable part of our state. Each Serb in Kosovo-Metohija must know that unilateral independence is a void act, that their government is seated in Belgrade and that they will always be citizens of Serbia with full civil rights, the Prime Minister said in a statement.
