Reason for unilateral declaration of Kosovo independence – status of NATO forces in province

Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said today that if the US and Great Britain unilaterally recognise Kosovo's independence, the real reason for that will be Annex 11 of Ahtisaari's plan that refers to the status of NATO forces in the southern Serbian province.

In a statement to the Beta news agency, Kostunica said that if the US and Great Britain dare to breach the UN Charter and UN Security Council Resolution 1244 and recognise unilateral independence of the province after December 10 on the basis of the already rejected Ahtisaari's plan, then it will be clear that the actual reason for this legal violence should be sought in Annex 11 of Ahtisaari's plan.
According to Kostunica, at the talks between representatives of Serbia and ethnic Albanians from Kosovo, held on September 28 in New York, it was evident that the Albanian side glorified Ahtisaari’s plan in every sentence they uttered, knowing that certain powers will agree to unilaterally acknowledge the independence for the sake of Annex 11 and the opportunity to realise their geo-strategic and military interests.
The Prime Minister said it is common knowledge that Annex 11 of Ahtisaari’s plan envisages international military presence in the province in the form of NATO forces, which would not have civil control and would thus create a precedent never before seen in the democratic world.
All this is telling us that the implementation of Annex 1 is more important to the US and UK than the fates of Kosovo-Metohija and Serbia, and that these two countries are guided by only their interests, stressed Kostunica.
