Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said today in a meeting with President of the European Court of Human Rights Jean-Paul Costa that the Serbian government attaches great importance to respect of human rights and freedoms, which is also clearly defined in the new Serbian Constitution.

He said that the institute of Ombudsman is also established and noted that an international conference on the role of supreme courts in applying the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms in Belgrade is of great importance.
Costa expressed satisfaction for participating in the work of the conference in Belgrade and added that Serbia is among first countries he is visiting since his appointment in January this year.
He stressed that the European Court of Human Rights has very good cooperation with Serbian institutions and added that Serbia has made significant progress in implementation of reforms.
The meeting also discussed regulatory activities in the area of judicial system reform.
