Serbian Minister of Interior Dragan Jocic stated that there is a realistic possibility that ethnic Albanians from Kosovo-Metohija, emboldened by US support, will unilaterally declare the province’s independence once the deadline for new talks expires, and called on the international community to inform Kosovo’s ethnic Albanians that this would be an illegal and void act.

In a statement to the Tanjug news agency, Jocic said that American insistence on Ahtisaari’s plan, together with frequent threats by Pristina that they will declare independence by year’s end, are a serious warning that there is actual danger of Albanian separatists’ unilaterally declaring independence once the 120 days for negotiations expire.
He said that the USA still insists on Ahtisaari’s plan which would enable the set up of permanent NATO control over the southern Serbian province.
It seems it is very important at this point that the international community sends a clear message to Albanian separatists telling them that unilateral independence is an illegal and void act. It would be particularly important if the EU representative in the troika of envoys, Wolfgang Ischinger, sends out such a message, said Jocic.
He warned that if a timely and clearly formulated condemnation of Albanian intentions to declare unilateral independence by end-2007 does not take place, this omission can be interpreted as tacit support and consent as to the realisation of such a perilous, illegal and unlawful scenario.
Minister Jocic reiterated that thanks to its joint and principled policy with Russia, Serbia succeeded in preventing the UN Security Council from voting on the Ahtisaari plan.
