Serbian President Boris Tadic and Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica talked today with the international mediation team for negotiations on the future status of Kosovo-Metohija, which comprises representatives of the EU Wolfgang Ischinger, Russia Aleksandar Bocan Harchenko and the US Frank Wisner.
Serbian President Boris Tadic informed the mediation trio on the position that it is necessary to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Serbia, and any solution for the future status of Kosovo-Metohija should be in line with the UN Charter.
Tadic said that new negotiations open up the possibility of reaching a solution based on compromise acceptable to both sides which should be approved by the UN Security Council.
Serbia firmly advocates a peaceful solution for the future regulation of the province and any threat of violence which comes from Kosovo Albanians is absolutely unacceptable as a way of resolving this complicated issue, said Tadic.
Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica presented a proposal to the mediation team concerning the principle for conducting the future talks, which could make a compromise solution possible.
The Serbian Prime Minister particularly stressed that unlike previous negotiations which were led by Martti Ahtisaari, in the new negotiations process the foremost and basic subject of direct talks must be the solution to the status issue itself.
Kostunica stressed that Ahtisaari’s plan cannot be a good basis for new negotiations, since the future solution for regulating the province must be based on international law.
The mediation trio jointly stated that it is ready to support a solution reached by the two sides through the new negotiations process.
They supported the proposal by Belgrade that the basic subject of talks must be the issue of the status of the province and that through necessary preparation direct talks must be started as soon as possible.
It was said in today’s talks that the solution reached through new negotiations must be confirmed by the UN Security Council.
The talks were attended also by Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic and Serbian Minister for Kosovo-Metohija Slobodan Samardzic.
