Advisor to the Serbian Prime Minister Vladeta Jankovic said today, commenting the allegations that the resolution of the Kosovo issue might be taken over by the Contact Group, that only the UN Security Council has the mandate to deal with the Kosovo problem.
Jankovic told the Beta news agency that the Serbian government still believes that the US administration will respect the UN Charter, which practically means that the solution for the Kosovo problem can be sought only within the framework of the UN Security Council mandate.
He also said that the statement of US Under Secretary of State Nicholas Burns that the US will recognise Kosovo's independence and that Russia has not been constructive in the talks held so far, causes serious concerns.
Burns is accusing Russia and Serbia of not being constructive enough when it comes to Kosovo's independence, but it is obvious that being constructive for him means unconditional agreement with Washington and nothing else, Jankovic said.
Apart from that, it is very worrying that Burns' only argument in favour of Kosovo's independence is that the US has promised that to the Albanians.
If all legal, political and moral principles can fall in face of an unjustified and legally unfounded promise made by a great power of the world, then the entire international order should be fearful, the Serbian Prime Minister's advisor concluded.
