Kostunica said in a joint press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, held after their meeting in Berlin today, that all drafts of a resolution, even the fifth, minimalist one, prejudice the future solution of Kosovo’s status, noting that we already have a valid Resolution 1244.
He reiterated that Serbia is against plan of UN Special Envoy Martti Ahtisaari because it disrespects the UN Charter, because it disobeys the principle of territorial integrity and sovereignty arising from the UN Charter and because the UN SC Resolution 1244 is disrespected.
The Serbian Prime Minister, who is on a one-day visit to Germany, pointed out that negotiations should not be burdened by ideas from Ahtisaari’s plan and that they must resume in accordance with UN SC Resolution 1244.
According to him, Kosovo-Metohija cannot be a unique case in the world and its independence would be a dangerous precedent for the region and the world.
Kostunica also said that negotiations so far were not conducted in the right way and have resulted in a solution that is acceptable only for one side, that is, Pristina.
Merkel said that Germany and the EU want to go beyond Resolution 1244 and therefore want to support a new UN SC resolution.
We do not wish to prejudice the independence of Kosovo, we wish to get to a solution through compromise, the German Chancellor pointed out and repeated Germany's support to Ahtisaari's plan.
After meeting with Merkel, Kostunica met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
