Djelic said that from next year on, students will travel to the EU more easily since the Agreement on Visa Relaxations will come into force on January 1, 2008 and Schengen visas will be free of charge.
He reiterated that the Serbian government aims to get the EU candidate status by end-2008 and enter the white Schengen list.
Students were also greeted by Austrian Ambassador to Belgrade Gerhard Jandl, Belgrade Deputy Mayor Radmila Hrustanovic and Vice-President of the European Movement in Serbia Aleksandar Gatalica.
The best students were chosen at a competition themed “Let’s Go to Europe” and the condition for entering the competition was grade point average above 8.5.
Students were given inter-rail and student cards, allowance of €150 and free-of-charge Schengen visas with which they will head for Vienna and then continue their trip according to their personal choice.
The visas expire on August 14 and the students must return to Serbia before midnight that day.
The key element of this project is promotion of European ideas and the need for cooperation and coexistence will other European peoples, as well as opening Serbia’s economy towards Europe.
The project is realised by the European Movement in Serbia together with Belgrade City Hall and Austrian embassy in Belgrade.
