At an event titled “Serbia’s Move” held in the framework of the music festival Exit, Djelic recalled that the very first day the new Serbian government began work the agreement on visa relaxations was initialled, and added that Brussels representatives have pledged that the system will begin to function from January 1, 2008.
According to Djelic, negotiations which began on June 13 in Brussels on the Stabilisation and Association Agreement, concern precisely questions which are directly connected to the White Schengen List.
Stressing that on July 13 the fourth technical round of negotiations with the EU was concluded, Djelic expressed expectation that in autumn European Commissioner for Justice, Freedom and Security Franco Frattini will visit Serbia, and the dialogue on visa regime will begin, with the goal that by the end of next year Serbia is put on the White Schengen List.
One of the conditions is issuance of new identity cards to Serbian citizens, on which intensive work is being done, said Djelic and added that the new identity cards, which are in accordance with European standards, will be available as early as this autumn, and new passports will be issued from March or April in the upcoming year.
