Government expects from EU to support inviolability of Serbian state borders

Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica announced before his visit to Portugal tomorrow, where he will speak with top officials of Portugal, the country that is presiding over the EU, and present Serbian government’s expectations from the EU to support the inviolability of Serbian state borders in accordance with principles and standards of international law.
In a written statement, Kostunica said that it is not in Europe’s real interest to violate the UN Charter and to try to create another Albanian state on the Serbian territory, adding that this would cause a long-term instability of the whole region, which certainly cannot be Europe’s authentic interest.
He stressed that Serbia wants real negotiations on the future organization of the province to start on the basis of the valid Resolution 1244.
We have experience with Martti Ahtisaari, who on his first arrival to Belgrade at the very start of the negotiating process announced that he support province’s independence. Such approach to negotiations leads nowhere and we see now that is the same approach which tries to push a resolution on an independent Kosovo in the UN Security Council, the Prime Minister pointed out.
He stressed that it very important, and that is the third crucial thing that these negotiations will discuss, that the EU strongly backs Belgrade’s proposal to solve the Kosovo issue without changing the borders in the Balkans again.
In other words, this issue should be solved in the same way as the issue of national minorities in Europe is solved. Changing Serbian borders is against its will and seizure of 15% of the country’s territory would be legal violence and precedent that would result in very dangerous consequences, Kostunica warned.
