Slobodan Samardzic
In a statement to the news agency Tanjug, Samardzic said that he expects that Russian President Putin will be principled and convincing in his stand that negotiations should be continued, that negotiations will be unconditional, that a solution should be found which will satisfy Belgrade and Pristina, that that should be done in the framework of the international law, in accordance with the UN Charter and the UN SC Resolution 1244, and a new process should be started in order to reach such a decision.
It is entirely possible that the US and President Bush understand and validate these arguments, perhaps not very quickly and immediately, but enough to begin a process which could promise peace in the region and give hope for a principled and lasting solution to the problem of Kosovo-Metohija, said Samardzic.
He said that this is also an opportunity that the EU, after the change in its presidency, begins to establish its own stand regarding Kosovo-Metohija on the basis of international law, the UN Charter and the Resolution 1244.
On occasion of Portugal’s assumption of EU presidency, Samardzic said that the EU was hesitant concerning the matter so far and many countries, several of those which held EU presidency, were ready to accept the US stand that Kosovo-Metohija should move towards independence.
The EU does not need new countries, especially not new unstable countries formed through illegal and illegitimate acts of secession. We are certain that Portugal will lead the EU bearing that in mind and conduct its policy concerning Kosovo-Metohija from that perspective, said Samardzic.
According to Samardzic, that is important for general EU policy at a time when they are soon to adopt a new proposal on reforms, which should lead to a new EU constitution or new replacement to the constitution.
It is important for the EU to be unified on the basis of the principled stands of their fundamental documents, and the main stands are respect of international law and rule of law, said the Minister for Kosovo-Metohija.
