Serbian Minister for Kosovo-Metohija Slobodan Samardzic said today that it was expected that Russian Ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin, on behalf of Russia, would reject the new draft resolution on Kosovo.

Samardzic told Tanjug news agency that Russia's position on the new resolution was known in advance, adding that the only new thing is that Ambassador Churkin said that Russia will no longer take part in discussions on such proposals.
He explained that the problem lies in limiting the deadline of possible new negotiations and worse still in the threat that the proposal of UN Special Envoy Martti Ahtisaari could be re-activated if talks fail.
As long as Ahtisaari's proposal is referred to as a solution, there will be no chance to make a resolution. His proposal cannot be improved since it advocates independence of Kosovo-Metohija, Samardzic explained.
Concluding that Ahtisaari's plan cannot be used in any way, the Minister reiterated that that is a clear position of Serbia and Russia.
He underlined that the basis for further negotiations should not be anyone's proposal, but the good political will to find a compromise solution that would be in the mutual interest of both Belgrade and Pristina.
We think that a new phase of negotiations should be launched, without prejudgments and limited deadlines, Samardzic said and added that Russia's rejection shows that with this kind of talk no solution can be found.
