US must respect Serbia’s internationally recognised borders

Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said today that frequent statements of US officials, which speak in favour of Kosovo-Metohija’s independence, lead to deterioration of relations between Serbia and the USA.

In a statement to the Beta news agency, Kostunica said that the US has become a leader in proposing that another Albanian state be created on Serbia’s territory, which directly affects the relations between these two countries.
According to Kostunica, officials in Belgrade have repeatedly stressed that preservation of territorial unity is Serbia’s highest state and national interest.
We think that our demand that the US, in line with the UN Charter, should respect Serbia’s internationally recognised borders, is completely legitimate. If the US wants to cherish good relations with Serbia, it then goes without saying that it must respect Serbia’s territorial wholeness, said the Prime Minister.
He explained that the entire international order, as well as inter-state relations between all sovereign countries, is based on this universal principle.
