In an interview for the Beta news agency which Samardzic gave on occasion of US President George Bush’s statement in Tirana that Kosovo-Metohija should be granted independence, the Minister stressed that the US may only decide whether one of its own federal units or states will become independent and it may not make any decisions regarding the territory of other countries, especially not sovereign and democratic ones.
According to Samardzic, to give independence to the southern Serbian province would be to breach international law, as well as an act of legal and factual violence.
All that took place in the UN Security Council and international diplomacy were attempts to reach a compromise solution for Kosovo-Metohija and an agreement within the framework of international law, recalled Samardzic and added that Belgrade does not expect the situation to change any time soon.
The Minister pointed out that the promise of Kosovo’s independence cannot pass, which was clearly seen in the G8 summit, where Russian President Vladimir Putin clearly presented the Russian position that it will veto a resolution which is contrary to international law and Serbia’s interests.
Samardzic explained that Putin’s stance enabled the resumption of negotiations, both at a high level between the United States and Russia, as well as between Belgrade and Pristina.
Serbia has support and understanding of Russia and a number of UN Security Council countries, which is enough for us not to give up, the Minister said.
