In a statement to the news agency Tanjug, Kostunica stressed that it is obvious that there is no consent regarding this resolution since Serbia is absolutely against it, as well as Russia which is a permanent member of the UN Security Council, and added that this makes it clear in advance that voting on a resolution which will fail and is not a good and constructive approach.
The Serbian Prime Minister said that a particularly harmful and destructive development in events could be that Albanian separatists use the failure of the resolution as an excuse to unilaterally declare the province independent in opposition to the UN Security Council.
He pointed to the fact that the Serbian government would instantly annul the decision on unilateral independence and declare it invalid because Kosovo-Metohija is an integral and unalienable part of Serbia.
Instead of adopting such an absolutely wrong approach which could have unforeseeable long term consequences for regional stability, it is necessary to begin real negotiations, said Kostunica.
According to Kostunica, the upcoming meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin will be an opportunity to examine new ideas on how to reach a solution based on compromise through the process of negotiations.
