Compromise in resolving Kosovo-Metohija status issue still possible

Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said last night in an interview for the Italian television Rai Uno that it is still possible to reach a compromise in resolving the issue of the future status of Kosovo-Metohija, but he stressed that Serbia cannot accept independence for the southern province.
Compromise is possible. That what Serbia can offer is maximum autonomy for Kosovo-Metohija, much larger than the autonomy which regions have, for example, in Spain or even here in Italy, said Kostunica speaking in TGI, the top news and information programme on Rai Uno.
Answering a question put by the Belgrade correspondent of Rai Uno, Kostunica said that he is certain Russia will not change its stand regarding Kosovo-Metohija.
Russia’s stand is principled and that is why I am certain that it will not change in the UN Security Council when the issue of Kosovo-Metohija is discussed, said the Serbian Prime Minister.
Responding to the question by Rai Uno whether there will be a war if despite all efforts Kosovo-Metohija does become an independent state, Kostunica said that since October 2000 Serbia has been a democratic country, and has shown many times until now that it is dedicated to peace.
