In a statement to the Tanjug news agency, Kostunica said that Serbia’s initiative for the continuation of negotiations and beginning of a new cycle of talks on the southern province is a realistic way out of the “blind alley which Ahtisaari’s plan has brought us to”.
He thinks that the acceptance of Ahtisaari’s assumption that compromise is unattainable and further talks should be given up was a huge mistake.
New talks must be held under the principle that compromise must be reached, said the Prime Minister and explained that this means imposed solutions should be left aside because no sovereign state will ever agree to having 15% of its territory taken away.
This is not and cannot be the solution to this problem, but only opens the door to greater and deeper problems in the region, said Kostunica.
That is why Serbia is strongly advocating an immediate commencement of an intensive and direct dialogue of the two sides which will not be burdened by artificial deadlines.
We expect this sensible initiative of ours to be accepted and that we will shortly sit down and try to reach a compromise solution acceptable to both sides through talks, concluded Kostunica.
