Sir Mark congratulated Djelic on the election of the new government and handed him a written congratulatory message from UK Minister of State for Europe Geoffrey Hoon.
He stressed that the UK strongly supports Serbia’s EU integration and will continue the process of providing support to the Serbian government in the realisation of its aims, and through the Department for International Development it will continue to help in realisation of the Poverty Reduction Strategy.
Special attention was paid at the meeting to modalities for resuming and concluding negotiations on the Stabilisation and Association Agreement as soon as possible.
Djelic underlined that it is necessary that regional stability be kept in mind while seeking a solution for the future status of Kosovo-Metohija. He reiterated the stand of the Serbian government that the plan presented by UN Special Envoy Marti Ahtisaari is not acceptable since it implies seizure of part of Serbian territory and it is necessary to once again examine the amendments made by the Serbian negotiating team which concern the issues of property, the building of multi-ethnic institutions and payment of debt.
Djelic expressed conviction that the new Serbian government will bring together all those who, in different ways, have thus far worked on realising Serbia’s European future.
