Director of the Serbian government’s EU Integration Office Tanja Miscevic said today that it is expected that the agreements on visa relaxations and readmission between Serbia and the EU will be signed in July and will come into force as of January 1, 2008.
Speaking in a panel discussion in the embassy of the Czech Republic, which is to assume the rotating EU presidency in 2009, Miscevic stressed that visa relaxations are not the end goal, rather the basic aim is the complete liberalisatin of the visa regime for Serbian citizens and the country’s inclusion in the White Schengen List.
She recalled that yesterday in Brussels, after negotiations spanning a few months,
the agreements on visa relaxations and readmission were initialled and that has successfully resolved conflicting points which regard the part of the readmission agreement regulating the status of citizens of other countries who enter the EU illegally.
Compromise was reached and a key element has been introduced into the agreement which concerns the entry of citizens of other countries through Serbia directly into the EU, explained Miscevic, and added that in that case Serbia will be obliged to give shelter to these citizens and implement further procedure.
Miscevic said that a debate has begun inside the EU on liberalisation of the visa regime for West Balkan countries which are not on the White Schengen List and added that the aim of these talks is to create a regional partnership and preparation of the list of conditions which these countries must fulfill.
