Stojkovic said that mediation represents a crucial segment of reform and improvement of the domestic judicial system.
He noted that the number of cases solved through mediation in developed countries reaches 50%.
According to him, mediation should speed up not only lawsuits but also criminal cases.
President of the Third Municipal Court Nada Mihajlovic said that the newly opened department is part of the national Centre for Mediation, which was opened last year.
She said that for the project of the mediation department the Ministry of Justice invested RSD 1 million, whereas the Netherlands government helped with equipment and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) provided professional and technical assistance.
Vilma van Benthem from the IFC’s programme for alternative case management said that of 2,000 mediations that took place in Serbia so far, 1,756 ended with agreement, which means 87% of the cases were positively solved.
FIC so far supported the opening of mediation department in the Second Municipal Court and the Commercial Court in Belgrade, Subotica and Nis.
