In a statement to the Tanjug news agency, Kostunica said that the fact that the Russian proposal clearly envisages that the new resolution should confirm Resolution 1244 is most important for Serbia since it will thus acknowledge Serbia’s sovereignty in Kosovo-Metohija and its territorial unity.
He stressed that since the talks on future Kosovo status began, Serbia has been adamant that there can be no alteration of its internationally recognised borders because it is the key principle valid for all countries in the world, and Serbia is no exception.
Serbia is also fully prepared to participate constructively and responsibly in negotiations to find a compromise solution for Kosovo-Metohija’s future status within Serbia, emphasised the Prime Minister.
The Russian proposal of the resolution, which will be discussed late today along with the French proposal in informal UN consultations, contains serious reservations towards Ahtisaari's proposal for the resolution of the status of Kosovo-Metohija and suggests the continuation of negotiations between Belgrade and Pristina that would lead to a mutually acceptable solution.
Russia also requested that the UN Security Council provide the continuation of negotiations between Belgrade and Pristina and take into account Serbia's proposal for the resolution of the status of Kosovo.
Also, Russia proposes that a new UN resolution for Kosovo must call for the full implementation of Resolution 1244 and the creation of a multi-ethnic society in the province, with full protection of all sacred and historical sites.
The Russian proposal requests that a future agreement on the resolution of Kosovo's status be implemented in phases.
