Serbian Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Policy Slobodan Lalovic said in Novi Sad that Serbia’s biggest problem is high unemployment rate among young people, which is considerably above the European level.
Lalovic said at the opening of Career Days fair that there are over 300,000 unemployed young people registered with the Serbian National Employment Service (NSZ).
The government has tried to reduce unemployment rate through a series of measures, he said and added that tax and contributions for workers younger than 30 have been reduced.
We aim to halve the number of unemployed young people by 2010, Lalovic said and described the meeting today as another measure to that goal.
Director of NSZ Radovan Ristanovic said that this service contributed to finding employment for 62,500 people last year.
According to Ristanovic, nearly RSD 1.5 billion or 0.067% of GDP was spent for this purpose. He also noted that employment rate among young people in Serbia stands at 18.7%, which is down from European average of over 40%.
Career Days is taking place today and tomorrow in Novi Sad’s Master Centre. The fair is being organised by the NSZ and the International Students Association.
