Coordinator of the state negotiating team for the talks on the future status of Kosovo-Metohija Slobodan Samardzic said yesterday in New York that Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica will dispute the main provisions of Martti Ahtisaari’s plan for the Kosovo-Metohija status settlement at the UN Security Council session, above all those envisioning independence for the Serbian southern province.
Samardzic told Tanjug news agency that Kostunica will state that Serbia by no means can renounce its territory.
He said that the Prime Minister will point to the importance of Resolution 1244 passed by the UN Security Council, the UN Charter and other UN documents, which should be the grounds for the Kosovo status settlement.
According to Samardzic, Kostunica will tell UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon that Serbia is ready to continue negotiations and expose reasons why Serbia must reject Ahtisaari’s proposal.
The Serbian side considers that Ahtisaari’s report will not result in any decision, lest a resolution is passed, Samardzic said and noted that it is necessary to state that Serbia has a very clear proposal – to continue the talks.
He also said that there is a great support not only from Russia and China, but also from some other UN Security Council members, that Ahtisaari’s idea be turned down and that negotiations resume.
Samardzic expressed hope that the UN Security Council will stick to fundamental documents of the UN and particularly Resolution 1244.
