At the UN headquarters in New York, UN Special Envoy Martti Ahtisaari will present his plan for the resolution of the Kosovo crisis and today’s meeting will be the first opportunity for talks among Security Council members regarding the future of Serbia’s southern province.
As part of preparations for the session, Serbian Prime Minister met with the Chinese and Russian UN ambassadors, Wang Guangya and Vitaliy Churkin respectively, whose support Belgrade is most seriously counting upon in the continuation of the Kosovo crisis resolution process.
Russian and Chinese ambassadors endorsed the Serbian position that talks on the province’s status should resume in order to reach a solution acceptable for both parties.
Both states, members of the UN Security Council, supported the initiative that a mission of the Security Council be sent to Kosovo-Metohija and Belgrade soon so that participants in the mission may see for themselves the validity of international officials’ reports on the state in the province, as well as the way international standards are being implemented which the international community prescribed as a precondition for status resolution.
Prior to the session today, due to start at 3 pm (9pm CET), Kostunica will talk with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.
