The Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia today, on the occasion of the World Meteorological Day, held a meeting under the title “Polar Year – studying global influences” dedicated to the project of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) “International Polar Year 2007” which regards the place of polar areas in the global climate system.
Director of the Hydrometeorological Service Jovanka Andrejevic opened the meeting and said that the World Meteorological Day has been observed since March 23, when the WMO’s Convention entered into force.
She stressed that the initiative for establishing a sub-regional climate centre in Belgrade has been launched, which got full support from countries of the region.
The WMO and national meteorological services of 189 countries of the world observe March 23 by dedicating it to one of the issues currently important for mankind.
A documentary film on polar meteorology was shown at the gathering which presents the importance of this branch of science in the protection of human lives and material goods and the controlling of the consequences of natural disasters.
During the international polar year more than several thousand scientists from 60 countries will carry out more than 220 scientific and research projects.
