Serbian Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-Government Zoran Loncar stated today that members of the Venice Commission declared that the new Serbian Constitution meets European standards, particularly the provisions concerning the position of national minorities.
In a statement to the Tanjug news agency following the Commission’s two-day meeting, Loncar explained that at the Commission’s 70th plenary session it was said that provisions in Serbia’s new Constitution that concern the legal position of national minorities are well beyond European standards in this area, which is also confirmed by the full democratic capacity of authorities in Serbia.
The Minister said that this was an opportunity for Commission members to become acquainted with the contents of amendments that the Serbian delegation submitted during recent negotiations on proposal for the Kosovo-Metohija status by UN Special Envoy Martti Ahtisaari.
These amendments are fully based on international documents and consistent to principles of inviolability of territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Serbia, Loncar said.
