Resolution of Kosovo status to be put-off

Coordinator of the Serbian state team for negotiations on Kosovo-Metohija's future status Slobodan Samardzic stated last night that after UN Special Envoy Martti Ahtisaari submits his proposal to the UN Security Council, he expects a blockade of the UN's supreme body which will additionally put off status resolution.

Last night in the TV show "Poligraf" on B92 television station, Samardzic announced that the Security Council will not be able to make a decision on the status of Serbia's southern province fast enough, therefore a blockade of a kind will come about since the Council's member countries, particularly those with the right to veto, must first reach agreement on Ahtisaari's proposal, its adoption and the drafting of a new resolution on Kosovo-Metohija.

"I believe they cannot reach this agreement before the end of March, or even longer, because Russia has already clearly stated that it will not accept any proposal on which Belgrade and Pristina do not agree", stressed Samardzic.

He added he is pretty certain that China is also not ready to accept such a proposal, as well as some other Council members, therefore they will not manage to reach consensus.

According to Samardzic, in that case, new direct talks might ensue and the world's greatest powers will not have the courage to acknowledge the province's independence unilaterally, that is, without the UN.

Samardzic also said that Serbia will reject the revised version of Ahtisaari's proposal, for which there will be no one to blame but Ahtisaari himself. He added that another Serbian refusal of the proposal will be the consequence of poorly organised negotiations and Ahtisaari's avoidance to organise them properly.

Samardzic said he does not expect that Ahtisaari will adopt the most consequential amendments Belgrade submitted, but only add minor corrections and place before the Security Council practically the same proposal as the one already rejected by the Serbian state officials in its majority.
