Representing Serbia at the regional ministerial conference “Danube – Black Sea: sustainable partnership in water management” in Bucharest, Bubalo said in a statement to the news agency Beta that Serbia joined the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR) in 2003, but succeeded in a short span of time to fully engage in the work of the ICPDR and catch up with other countries.
Apart from the efforts being made in the framework of the ICPDR, Serbia plays an active role in other commissions which deal with similar issues, such as the Commission for the River Sava and the Commission for the River Tisa, stressed the Minister.
He said that efforts directed at pollution reduction in the Danube River basin have already contributed to improving environmental conditions in the Danube and Black Sea, as shown by recent studies.
Bubalo pointed out the importance of financial support by the UN and the international organisation for financing environmental protection projects in the Danube regional project, which officially concluded on February 22.
According to Bubalo, Romania as the president of the ICPDR this year, recommended that cooperation between all Danube basin countries in improving the quality of water in the Danube and the Black Sea be strengthened, by promoting the EU policy in that area.
Representatives of 16 Danube basin and Black Sea Zone countries are taking part in this ministerial meeting, as well as of the European Commission. The Serbian delegation is being led jointly by Bubalo and Director of the Water Management Directorate and head of the Serbia delegation to the ICPDR Nikola Marjanovic.
