“I most heartily congratulate all members of the Serbian Army and the Ministry of Defence on the Day of the Serbian Armed Forces.
I am convinced that the date you have selected to observe this occasion should remind all of us not just of Sretenje 1804 and the glorious days of the First Serbian Uprising, but of all the trials we have been through and of the great triumphs which the Serbian nation achieved in its long history. In those trials, the army always stood by the people, from whom it originates, and the people were with the army. That is the support and confidence which you, as members of the armed forces, have to this day in all of Serbia.
Serbia has given a clear response to the proposal that one more Albanian state is created on the territory of the province of Kosovo-Metohija. It was determined by the will of the people and made part of the Constitution that Kosovo-Metohija is an unalienable and integral part of Serbian territory. Serbia is firmly determined to respect its Constitution, the UN Charter and the fundamental principles of international law, to respect law and justice, and it is of the greatest importance that Serbia never wavers from this principled stand.
I particularly wish to stress that we are committed to reaching a compromise solution through agreement, but at the same time we are fully determined not to accept legal aggression, which would change our borders and tear away a part of our territory.
Serbia will build its army as a modern armed force which is required by the challenges of modern times. This is an institution which always had the full confidence of the Serbian people, and we are building it today in the best traditions of the Serbian Army, in accordance with the demands of modern times, in the spirit of modern scientific and military ideas and technological advancement. According to the policy of peace and good neighbourly relations, the Serbian Army must play a leading role in the security and stability of the region.
As I greet you on the Day of the Serbian Armed Forces, I want to express my conviction that in the upcoming period efforts will be continued to improve the material position of members of the army, modern equipment and weapons will be secured and the Serbian Army in general will have the position they deserve in our society and country. Only then will the Serbian Army truly become a reliable guarantor of peace in our part of the world,” reads the message of greetings by the Serbian Prime Minister.
