Director of the Veterinary Directorate at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Dejan Krnjaic stated that the risk of a bird flu outbreak in Serbia has increased after a new location of the infection was identified in Hungary, but added however that apart from the current high level of precautionary measures there is no need for any further steps as yet.

In a statement to the Tanjug news agency, Krnjaic stressed that the new location of bird flu disease in Hungary is nowhere near the border with Serbia which is why there is no need to introduce additional measures such as disinfection or keeping poultry in closed spaces.
He emphasised that none of the neighbouring countries have introduced these measures and recalled that last week, when the infected zone in Hungary was identified, the Veterinary Directorate issued a ban on the import of poultry and poultry products from this country.
According to Krnjaic, poultry health control has been increased on farms and markets, wild birds are being monitored throughout Serbia and special care is being paid to border areas with Hungary and other countries where avian influenza was detected last year.
Krnjaic stated that if bird flu spreads in Hungary or breaks out in Romania, the Veterinary Directorate is prepared to immediately take new protective measures in line with the law.
Veterinary teams are ready and trained and a detailed strategy stating the duties and tasks of every team member was adopted, said Krnjaic and added that should there be an outbreak of bird flu, the public will be notified on time therefore there is no reason for anyone to worry, let alone to panic.
