In an interview to the news agency Tanjug, Omeragic said that the status of city will allow Novi Pazar to play a key role in the development of the entire region, and to have a positive influence on the progress of neighbouring municipalities.
He explained that the new status implies larger funds from the Serbian budget worth several million Euros annually and more income from tax revenues.
The status of city will allow closer interaction between administration and citizens, considering the fact that Novi Pazar will be divided into several municipalities, and all problems connected to local authorities and everyday life of citizens will be resolved more quickly and more simply, said Omeragic.
According to Omeragic, the population of municipality of Novi Pazar is more than 100,000, and it is the largest economic, commercial and educational centre in that part of Serbia.
Omeragic recalled that last week the government adopted an amendment to the Bill on territorial organisation of Serbia, according to which three municipalities – Valjevo, Novi Pazar and Sombor will get the status of city.
