In a session of the group of tobacco growers and processors in the Serbian Chamber of Commerce (PKS), Sekulovic pointed out that Serbia will not ratify the Central European Free Trade Agreement (CEFTA) until state tobacco policy is cleared.
According to Sekulovic, protection of the domestic tobacco production must be aligned with standards of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and the EU.
The Excise Law as well as Tobacco Law should be changed, he said and added that new incentive models for tobacco premiums need to be found.
With four large tobacco makers, Serbia cannot be satisfied with its current tobacco exports of $8 million in nine months of 2006 whilst tobacco imports in the same period were over $68 million, Sekulovic said.
He noted that according to data from PKS, a total of 6,110 tons of tobacco were produced last year in Serbia, which is the same as in 2005 and three times less compared to the early 1990s.
