SMEs most lucrative in 2005

The Serbian Ministry of Economy stated that last year the small and medium-enterprises (SMEs) sector had a 4% higher profitability rate than the economy as a whole, as well as a 7.3% higher rate than large enterprises.
In the Ministry's statement on SMEs and entrepreneurship in 2005, it says that this sector was the most lucrative with a profitability rate of 40%.
The statement adds that 70% of this sector's profit was realised in trade and processing industries.
Of SMEs' total profit, 64.2% was achieved on the territory of Belgrade and the Southern Banat District.
The SME sector employed 810,000 people last year and the employment rate was 7.7% higher than in 2004, whereas at the same time the total turnover in the sector was RSD 2.7 billion, which is a 4.7% fall in comparison with 2004.
The SME and entrepreneurship sector included 276.695 companies, out of which 72.284 were small enterprises, 2,452 were medium-sized and 201,959 were shops.
