Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior in a caretaker capacity Ivica Dačić stated that a terrorist attack on a member of the Gendarmerie who was securing the Embassy of Israel in Belgrade took place last night, 15 minutes past midnight.
Following the incident, orders were issued to raise the terrorist threat level to the highest degree and to increase police presence at key locations.
Dačić specified that a minor, whose identity has not yet been established, but there is grounded suspicion that the minor is from Šabac, attacked the Gendarmerie officer with two knives while shouting "Allahu Akbar".
He added that the Gendarmerie officer neutralised the attacker in self-defence, but sustained minor injuries in the process, specifically, a cut to his face inflicted by one of the knives used in the attack.
Given that the terrorist attack occurred on our territory, and in my capacity as the Minister of the Interior responsible for this matter, I have raised the terrorist threat level to the highest possible degree—the red level, Dačić explained.
According to him, this entails heightened monitoring and an increased police presence at locations of particular security significance, including infrastructure facilities and places where large numbers of citizens gather.
He pointed out that our security services had been monitoring the attacker, noting that he was known to be a supporter of the Islamic State and had displayed the black flag and the emblem of the Islamic State on his Instagram profile.
