Serbia’s approach to disaster risk reduction sets example for region

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dačić said today that disaster risk reduction and the development of emergency management systems are of exceptional importance for Serbia, noting that the country has been developing cooperation with the United Nations in this area for a decade and a half.

Following a meeting at the Palace of Serbia with Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction and Head of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) Kamal Kishore, Dačić said that the Ministry of the Interior has been addressing disaster risk reduction for many years, as well as the national system for disaster risk reduction and emergency management.

He noted that the Ministry of the Interior is the national focal point for disaster risk reduction within the UN system and that Serbia is implementing the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 through the development of a national system for disaster risk reduction and emergency management.

Speaking about the National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, Dačić explained that it is a coordination mechanism and provides guidelines for disaster risk reduction, bringing together the public and private sectors, as well as civil society, including all relevant stakeholders within the country.

He also highlighted the importance of prevention and strengthening emergency response capacities, as well as cooperation with local self-governments.

Kishore said that Serbia is an inspiration for the region and beyond when it comes to disaster risk reduction, as it is working systematically on disaster risk analysis, planning and taking action accordingly.

In this regard, he said that Serbia’s approach, which involves establishing a disaster risk register, analysing those risks and planning measures based on assessed risks, represents an achievement that deserves praise.
