Successful completion of Serbian firefighters-rescuers’ mission in France

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dačić today welcomed at the Makiš Training Centre members of the Emergency Situations Sector who returned from France, where they had been deployed to help fight the major wildfires that affected the country.

Dačić told members of the Wildfire Fighting Team, comprising 34 firefighters-rescuers and three members of the medical team, with a total of 15 official motor vehicles and two trailers, that they were not only a source of pride for the Ministry of the Interior, but for the entire Republic.

You created around three kilometres of firebreak and, together with your French and Romanian colleagues, did what you went there to do – you helped protect people and property, he stressed.

Dačić said that the Ministry of the Interior would continue investing in people, equipment and vehicles, recalling that over the past five years, 142 new vehicles had been procured for the needs of firefighting and rescue units from national and international sources, while the procurement of another 40 vehicles for fighting wildfires and other interventions had also been announced.

Chargée d’affaires at the Embassy of France in Serbia Natacha Ephimoff said that the ties between the two countries in the field of civil protection were longstanding, strong and at the service of their peoples.

This relationship of trust has been built over time through the regular organisation of training sessions, exchanges of experience and joint exercises, Ephimoff said, stressing the importance of field services continuing to learn from one another and share experiences so that they can better respond to crisis situations.

The experience, professionalism and technical skills of the Serbian delegation, she noted, had been recognised, while their activities had directly contributed to containing the fires and preventing their recurrence.

On behalf of the Embassy of France in Serbia, she expressed gratitude for their engagement, stressing that the solidarity demonstrated in the field was testament to the strength of international cooperation, particularly European cooperation through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
