The modernised Horgos border-crossing was opened today on the Serbian border with Hungary, whose construction was financed by the EU, through the European Agency for Reconstruction (EAR), in cooperation with the Serbian government.

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Ivana Dulic-Markovic said following the opening ceremony, that she expects that the European Commission will not stop offering support to Serbia in the country’s efforts to join the EU despite the temporary halt in negotiations.
She said that continuation of reforms and completion of Serbia’s cooperation with The Hague is in the interest of Serbia and her citizens.
Director of the EU Enlargement Directorate-General Michael Lee said that the Horgos border-crossing construction cost €10 million and is the second most expensive infrastructure in Serbia, financed by EU funds, the most expensive being Sloboda Bridge in Novi Sad.
Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs Kinga Goncz said that the opening of the border-crossing is a symbolic move which points to the improvement of relations between the two countries, and added that this crossing will be of practical value.
She said that it is necessary to improve the quality of rail and air transport between Hungary and Serbia, and expressed expectation that Serbia will soon become a member of the EU.
The opening ceremony was also attended by Head of the European Commission delegation in Serbia Josep Lloveras, Head of Operations at the EAR Belgrade office Christos Gofas and Deputy Director of the Serbian Building Directorate Dejan Vasovic.
