UNMIK’s greater visibility, presence needed on ground

Director of the Serbian government’s Office for Kosovo and Metohija Petar Petković met today with Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of UNMIK Peter Due to discuss numerous examples of violations of the fundamental human and political rights of Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija, as well as Priština’s unilateral and unlawful actions.

Petković stressed the importance of UNMIK’s activities in Kosovo and Metohija, in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244.

He expressed confidence that UNMIK would continue, through its reports, to consistently and dedicatedly address all violations of the rights of the Serbian people, which are being jeopardised by almost daily anti-Serb and escalatory actions by Albin Kurti that undermine peace and stability in Kosovo and Metohija.

By announcing the implementation of the so-called law on foreigners and vehicles, Priština is seeking to further jeopardise numerous human rights of Serbs guaranteed by international conventions, including, among others, the rights to freedom of movement, work and family life, as well as the rights to education and healthcare, Petković underlined.

He concluded that the Serbian people in Kosovo and Metohija have significant trust in the work of UNMIK, but also expect greater visibility and presence of this mission on the ground.
