Serbia among highest-rated countries in preventing money laundering, terrorist financing

The Ministry of Finance announced today that the Council of Europe Committee MONEYVAL has published a report assessing Serbia’s effectiveness in combating money laundering and terrorist financing, showing that Serbia has made tremendous progress over the past ten years and achieved one of the best results in the world.

The evaluation process began in May 2024 and lasted 20 months. The assessment was carried out by MONEYVAL based on the global evaluation methodology established by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

According to the MONEYVAL report, Serbia received seven out of 11 positive ratings, placing it among the best results globally.

Positive ratings were awarded in the areas of national risk assessment and coordination, international cooperation, financial sector supervision, transparency of legal entities and their beneficial owners, criminal prosecution of money laundering, confiscation of assets acquired through criminal activity, and financial sanctions to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

This distinguishes Serbia as one of the leaders in Europe and the world, given that only 13 countries have achieved seven to ten positive ratings.

The report notes that during the evaluation period, numerous legislative and operational reforms were implemented, along with improvements to the system for preventing money laundering and terrorist financing.
