Minister for Family Care and Demography Jelena Žarić Kovačević stated in Madrid that Serbia can be proud of its policies supporting parenting and family.
Žarić Kovačević is leading the Serbian delegation at the two-day Global Caregiver Forum, dedicated to efforts to ensure that children around the world grow up in a healthy, safe and supportive environment.
On the first day of the forum, at a panel discussion dedicated to parenting as the basis of child development, she emphasised that Serbia has prioritised parental leave from work, as well as invested in integrated support for parents, combining counselling in the health system, preschool, primary and secondary education and social protection, but also developing financial incentives and digital services.
By doing so, the state has provided a key opportunity to strengthen parent-child interaction, which is the basis for quality child development, the minister pointed out.
Support for parenting is a strategic investment of every country in health, education, family, security, but also in the overall development and growth of society, she said.
The participating countries of the Global Caregiver Forum in Madrid endorsed the joint declaration “Every child safe, loved, and nurtured”, which states that more than half of children around the world face some form of abusive parenting and neglect, which can have serious physical, mental and social consequences on their lives.
