Speaking at the plenary session of the 4th International Conference on Missing Persons, Kozarev noted that approximately 40,000 people went missing during these wars, while more than 9,500 individuals remain listed as missing in the region.
The Secretary General pointed out that, over the past few years, the politicisation of the entire process has brought cooperation with institutions in Croatia and the provisional institutions of self-government in Kosovo and Metohija to a standstill, resulting in a negligible number of cases of missing persons being resolved.
He emphasised that more than 1,500 Serbs from the territory of present-day Croatia remain listed as missing, while more than 250,000 Serbs were expelled from their homes during the criminal Operation Storm.
Kozarev also pointed to numerous cases of kidnapped and missing Serbs and members of other non-Albanian communities in Kosovo and Metohija, adding that the fate of many of those who remain missing has still not been determined, more than two and a half decades after the conflict.
