Prime Minister Professor Đuro Macut, MD, DSc, stated today, at the Third national conference Serbia – Our Family, that no issue is more important than demography and that demographic measures are a permanent priority of the Serbian government.
Macut underlined that, alongside all financial incentives and family support measures that Serbia has launched in recent years, the Family and Demography Council has, for the first time, been formed as the highest coordination mechanism for demographic policy.
The body is tasked with monitoring population developments and proposing effective measures, while harmonising the policies of all relevant departments, he said.
In addition to the relevant ministers, members of the Council will also include representatives of the academic community and citizens’ associations, in order to achieve the best results through joint work, added the Prime Minister, who will chair the Council.
He noted that demographic challenges have long transcended the borders of individual countries, making it crucial to have a constant exchange of experiences, concrete plans and solutions that have yielded results in other countries, which is why, according to him, this conference is of particular importance.
He stated that one of the important topics, in addition to population issues and support for the family, will be the strengthening of policies related to the health of the nation.
Investments in quality healthcare, raising awareness of prevention and continued investments in state-of-the-art diagnostics and lifesaving medicines are necessary for a healthy nation, stable families and a stable society, Macut pointed out.
The Prime Minister emphasised that long-term investment in education is also crucial, as it represents another pillar of sustainable demographic development.
That is why today we are also discussing education and the development of skills among children and young people as a crucial part of the demographic policy, the Prime Minister said, adding that only in this way is it possible to ensure a stable future, meet the demands of the contemporary labour market and gain the trust of young people to build their plans and future in Serbia.
